It was a very busy, very exciting year and I am glad that it is behind me now! So far my second year in residency is turning out to be a little more low key, it won't stay that way all year but I thought I could take advantage of it right now and blog a little more. So many people ask me about my schedule...it changes monthly and sometimes daily! I thought that occasionally I could do a "day in the life" post and give a little glimpse into what goes on at the hospital.

Yesterday was the first day of the month, and in pediatrics, that means everyone starts in a new place, and I started Outpatient. In July I was on an elective month doing anesthesia...I was able to do several intubations, which is where you place a tube in the airway so a person can breathe while they are put to sleep for surgery. I learned a lot but I was lonely without all of my peds friends! Outpatient month is spent in the emergency room and the general pediatric clinic. I was in the ER yesterday. Here's how my day went, the short version!

6:45 AM arrived at the ER to get checkout from the person coming off of night shift, then started seeing patients. It is usually slow until about 10 or 11 AM when it gets steady, and then around supper time people start pouring in to the ER! We see so many kids each day. Some people keep count of how many kids they see but that's just one more thing to keep track of to me! Here are a few cases I saw yesterday:

Injured shoulder (football-glad it wasn't heat exhaustion-drink your water!!!)

Partially amputated finger (it was repaired in surgery)

Busted lip that needed stitches...these were the hardest stitches I have ever done...you have to line up the border of the lip so it looks even when it heals!!!

Possible malaria (travel outside of the country, we don't have malaria here)

At 6:45 PM my replacement came and I gave her checkout on a few patients so she could take over their care. By a little after 7:00PM my paperwork was complete and I headed home. There are no "breaks" in the ER. It's 12 hours, and if you're busy for that whole 12 hours, you probably won't sit down for any length of time. Usually in the mornings we get some down time. We always find time to squeeze in some lunch, but it might not be when you'd really like it to be! It's an exciting, busy place to be. The variety of patients we see keeps it very interesting.

Megan and Sarah Get Crafty...

About a month ago I called Megan to see if we could have a craft night...

I had never made a wreath before, so here is the story of my very first wreath...

Trip to Hobby Lobby for supplies!!! We'll see if I can keep it up!

We got home from Winter Park, Colorado late last night. Such a fun trip! We went with my best friend Lauren and her husband Brett as well as Christopher Allen Scott Jaggars. It was my second time to snow ski and I am proud to say that I progressed from a "green-only pizza wedger" to a blue/green (still slow!) skier. We skied from the highest point accessible by lifts. Lauren and I also enjoyed lots of people watching, cookie/ice cream eating, and margarita drinking in the village while the boys tore up the powder on the top of the mountain! Here are a few fun pics from the week!

At Hernando's, the best pizza place ever in WP! Here's what the schedule consisted of:

Sunday PM: Welcome dinner at Cozymel's. All 24 peds interns and the 5 med/peds interns plus significant others had dinner together, on the department of course! Several attendings were there and it was a great time of meeting people. They also gave out schedules for orientation and gave us our MedStudy books, a generous gift from ACH to help us study for boards!

Monday: ACH orientation, a great day. We were in the fancy-schmancy board room. We received our moving bonuses!, pagers, and our ipod touches already loaded with excellent medical apps that we'll need during residency.

Tuesday: UAMS orientation. Took pictures for badges, got shots, and listened to a lot of information about HIPAA (patient privacy), insurance, and more.

Wednesday: More UAMS orientation. Pretty boring. But Wednesday evening the Dept. of Pediatrics took everyone to the Travs game. We had a great time! Free food and it wasn't too hot. Great meeting some of the residents I didn't already know and catching up with others!

Thursday AM: ACH orientation again. We received our scrubs and learned about the ACH standards of care.

Thursday PM: Back to UAMS to turn in forms...now UAMS pays for my insurance!!!

Friday: Neonatal resuscitation training. We learned how to resuscitate babies who have just been born if they are having trouble breathing right after delivery. Very interesting!

Overall, a fairly good week. I've been trying to stay up later at night to get used to getting a little less sleep. Most of our days this week started around 7:30 AM.

And the overview for next week:

Monday and Tuesday: PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) training. This is what to do if a child codes (heart stops beating, they stop breathing, etc.). It's supposed to be pretty intense I think. Luckily we already had adult ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) and some parts are similar.

Wednesday: computer training

Thursday: THE REAL WORLD STARTS! This is the day we officially start working. I'll be starting on an inpatient team (Team 1). I'll be taking care of infants and toddlers with general pediatric problems that need to stay in the hospital for a few days. I've heard great things about this team and the people I'm working with already, so I'm very excited. Also, Thursday night is my first night on call, so that's scary! Luckily, it's short call so I don't have to sleep at the hospital.

I plan to try to update a little more often now that I'm working, when I get a little time. I hope I have some interesting stories to share! I'll try to do a post later this week that explains some more about what I'll be doing. And then I'll try to update Friday about my first day on the job!

Vacation Recap

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v24.nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D8d35eb854857d07d%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331739577%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D727A46EABFF3DDABFF2F1985D2D8CF27678D2547.217188A086A85CC373D7193FDDC80FBF3E26FF39%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D8d35eb854857d07d%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Dhfp1QAYrDJ1tLYaJg-Zq4YIby3Y&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

We had such a fun trip! If you follow Jordan on twitter or facebook, you already know most of what we did!

We made it to the 4 big parks at DisneyWorld: Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios. The rides were all really fun, but my favorite part was probably the fireworks every night.

Epcot-IllumiNations

Magic Kingdom-Wishes

Hollywood Studios-Fantasmic!

Fantasmic was not so much a fireworks show, but more of a laser/water show. It was amazing. The stadium seats about 2000 people (or more!) We had to get there 90 minutes early to make sure we had a seat. Crazy, but worth it!

Of the fireworks, I think Fantasmic! was Jordan's favorite, but mine was Wishes! It was so fun seeing the castle change colors, Tinkerbell fly down, and the music was incredible! The last part of the video above shows part of Wishes.

Our favorite rides were Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Expedition Everest, Kilaminjaro Safaris, Tower of Terror, and Rockin Rollercoaster.

We saw several shows while in the parks, including Finding Nemo, the Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast. We also saw the Indiana Jones stunt show and Lights, Motor, Action! stunt show. Finding Nemo was definitely my favorite. The costumes were amazing!

Hope you enjoy the video!

Can you guess where we're going???

DISNEYWORLD!

I'm so excited! Jordan bought this house in 2007 (if my memory is correct!) and since then it has undergone some drastic changes! We've painted the inside (in some rooms twice!), redone the floors in the kitchen and master bedroom, replaced the old deck with a bigger and nicer one, new appliances to the kitchen, painted kitchen cabinets...I'm sure there is more! But I think the latest project is definitely one of the best! As you can see in the before, we had a yellow-ish color, some lovely cedar shingles, and a green door. There used to be green shutters to match!

Painting day! One of our good friends recommended this painter to us and he did a super job! They finished painting our house in about nine hours! Amazing!

And here is the finished product! A nice, crisp white! Bright blue front door! New black shutters! And new lighting fixtures for the outside. Also notice the brick flower beds Jordan and Chris made for me so I could plant fun things!

What do you think of our Extreme Makeover?

We love it!!!

Becoming a Doctor...

On March 18th, 2010, I got to open a very important letter. It started at 10:00 AM. We couldn't open envelopes until 11:00. At 11 they started randomly drawing peoples names out of a bowl, and as your name was called you went up on stage and opened your envelope! We were so excited (and relieved) to know that I get to stay here at Children's Hospital. Residency officially starts July 1st! (But we get to warm up a little with orientation the week before).

A few weeks ago, Jordan's mom and dad took us on a trip to New Orleans! I spent one week in the ER at ACH, one week in the nursery at UAMS, a week in the Developmental Clinic and Adolescent Clinic, and this week I'll be in the GPC (General Peds Clinic). It's been a lot of fun. I was really glad to get to work in the ER because it can be a confusing place to be so I was glad I got the chance to see how it works.

On February 24th my rank list is due. I've already made it and submitted it, but it doesn't really count until 2/24. That's the same day the programs submit their rank lists. Then a big magical computer "matches" everyone who's applying to any residency in the country this year. Crazy! Hope there aren't any technical difficulties! Between Feb. 24th and March 15th everyone sits around biting their nails, hoping we've matched. Then on the 15th you find out IF you matched. IF you matched (and hopefully everyone does) you hang tight until March 18th. Then on March 18th, my entire medical school class gathers at West End in LR around lunchtime. Everyone's name is placed into a hat. When your name is drawn from the hat, you go up on the stage and open the envelope that says where you've matched! And hopefully it is your first choice! Isn't it wild? This whole process has resembled rush so much it's unbelievable. You just get a 4 month break between bid day and pledge year. ;)

More updates to come. We just got back from a whirlwind trip to Oklahoma City and Kansas City for my first two pediatric residency interviews. We left Monday morning for Oklahoma c

City. Lucky for us, most pediatric programs pay for our lodging which is awesome! So we got to OKC and found our hotel, the Sheraton downtown, right near Bricktown. We had some time so we walked around Bricktown. It is really neat! There is even a little riverwalk area! Very cool. Here are some pics from Bricktown:

Later that night we were invited to dinner with some of the residents at an OU physician's house. It was an interesting evening. There are many stories to tell, but it would take forever, so I will move on to my favorite part of Monday night...we got to see Meredith and Nathan!!! Yea!!! So exciting! It was great to visit with both of them! They drove us around Nichols Hills where they live, and also took us to see Chesapeake, where Nathan works. What an amazing place! It was all decorated for Christmas, and the entire campus looked like THIS:

Yea for friends! On the way into town, we stopped to eat some authentic KC BBQ at Oklahoma Joes, a famous BBQ joint in a gas station! It was awesome. Then we headed downtown to find our hotel, the Westin Crown Center. AMAZING. We had a corner room with a balcony (too bad it was 29 degrees). This is the Christmas tree at the hotel!

While I interviewed on Wednesday, Jordan took a little trip to Lawrence, KS, home of the Jayhawks, his favorite college BB team! So good to see them! Sad I don't have a picture to share, but my camera battery died early!

Now the low-down on the actual interviews...

OU Children's (OKC): The dinner the evening before the interview really set the tone of weirdness for the interview. The program seems to be on the way up, but not nearly as good as ACH. They had an awesome new 10-story clinic building connected to the hospital, which was great. I didn't feel like I would fit in very well with the residents there.

Children's Mercy (KC): We missed the dinner the night before. Breakfast the morning of the interview was in the cafeteria at the hospital, and I have to say that it was the coolest cafeteria ever! It was set up like a diner with all the bright neon lights and red retro chairs! Very fun! The facilities seemed very nice. I think the program itself is very similar to ACH. They do less Heme/Onc in the first year, which is a bit of a negative to me because I like Heme/Onc. They just finished expanding their ER to 75 beds, which is huge. (Could be positive or negative, depending on how you look at it! More patients for great exposure to various problems, but more work and craziness when you are working in the ER!)

Overall I have to say that I thought Children's Mercy in Kansas City is very similar to ACH. It was great to have something to compare it to!

We are off to Louisville next!

Exciting November...

We have an exciting November ahead of us! Here are some of the things I'm looking forward to this month...

Black Friday!!! A few years ago we started participating in the early morning shopping madness that takes place the day after Thanksgiving, and I think it is soooo fun and soooo entertaining! I'm usually not looking for any particular deals, but we find some good things, and it's so fun to watch people running through the stores for what they want! P.S.--We are the ones waiting in the car, watching all of the people run inside once they open the doors. It's too cold to wait in those lines!

Thanksgiving! YUMMY!!!

Elton John/Billy Joel Concert!

Zac Brown Band Concert!!!

Another shopping event that I look forward to all year! Holiday House is a huge gathering of local vendors showing of all of the cutest stuff! A great place for Christmas shopping!

Razorback games! The South Carolina game this weekend was so fun! I will try to be better! The problem is that really last month was kinda boring! Here's the short version:

I finished Allergy/Immunology near the end of September. I loved it. Then for the past four weeks I had to take a required rotation in surgical subspecialties (Orthopedic Surgery, Anesthesia, Urology, and ENT). Here are the highs and lows...

Orthopedic Surgery

Best: ACL repair surgery. I always thought this was a very simple surgery and was surprised at how complex the repair is!

Worst: The sound of the drills and saws they use. It gave me chills! Blah!

Urology (this was the worst week)

Best: I have to say it. If you watch Grey's Anatomy, a few weeks ago they had an episode where a man got, you guessed it, a penis implant! OMG! I guess this was the best just because I happened to see one get put in the very same week this showed up on Grey's. And really, how many people can say they've seen an implant quite like this?!?!

Worst: Prostate biopsy. Do I have to say much more?

Anesthesia (I actually really enjoyed this because I learned how to intubate better and also got to start IV's, plus I was back at ACH!)

Best: Putting in IV's!!! I got every one of mine on the first try! Haha I guess it helps when the patient is asleep and paralyzed on the OR table!!!

Worst: Waiting around during the surgeries. A little boring if you ask me!

ENT (Also did this at ACH, so it was very beneficial)

Best: Clinic. I have mentioned before that I really like clinic, and this was no exception. I got to look in lots of little ears!!!

Worst: The 10 million tonsillectomy and ear tube surgeries I saw! This is a very beneficial surgery for kiddos, but once you've seen one, you've seen them all!

For the next 4 weeks I will be doing an Infectious Disease rotation at ACH. It has proven to be interesting so far, and I think I will learn a lot. I hope I learn a lot, because so far I've had some VERY long days!!! I'm still enjoying it though, because I get to see the kids every day and I really am learning more about common (and uncommon!) pediatric illnesses and how to treat them best!

More soon!

Allergy and Immunology Was SO FUN!...

The past 4 weeks have been so wonderful! I have been doing a rotation with the Allergy/Immunology (A/I) service at ACH. We had clinic on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and on Tues/Fri we would meet for short lecture and also do consults (see patients in the hospital). This was a great rotation for many reasons:

1. Sleep. I got a lot of it. I usually had to be at work by 8:30 or a little earlier. This was wonderful. I got to eat my cereal, drink coffee, and watch Fox and Friends before going to work!!!

2. Learning. Food allergies and asthma are important things to know about as a pediatrician. I feel more confident about those topics now. Also, immunology is really confusing and most immune deficiencies are really rare, so it was great to get some exposure to these rare diseases and to learn more about them.

3. People. I LOVED the people I worked with this month. The resident I worked with was so fun and very nice! The nurses were wonderful and so helpful to us. And the attendings were the best I could ever ask for! One of them even called me on my last day to thank me for working with them! What?!

4. Clinic. I really like it. You get to see tons of people throughout the day and it is fast paced.

5. Days off. This relates to #1 but it was really nice to have time to do things and not be rushing around after getting off really late everyday!

Sadly, this 4 weeks has come to an end, but it will probably be my favorite rotation of this year. For the next 4 weeks I will be doing a required rotation in surgical subspecialities: Orthopedic surgery, ENT, Anesthesia, and Urology. I start Ortho tomorrow.

Quick update on Residency applications: So far I have six interviews. ACH, Oklahoma City, Augusta, Birmingham, Charleston, and Louisville. :) It is very exciting and I am looking forward to seeing all of these places when we interview in December and January, and also looking forward to seeing friends nearby!!!

Here is a pic from the AR v. GA game two weekends ago. We had a blast!!! Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Application "in the mail"...

Today I was very lucky and got one more day off of work! To make the day somewhat productive and not a total waste, I finished everything I could for my application and went ahead and submitted it! I think I almost had a heart attack when I was pressing "submit"...It is very nerve-wracking! There are some parts of the application that you can go back and modify, but some that you cannot change after you submit. I am still waiting on some LOR (letters of recommendation) so will have to add those later. Here is the list of places I have applied to so far. At least the first part! I got my score for Step 2 CK back in mid August, and I was very happy with it. We traveled to HotLanta last weekend for the second part of Step 2, the clinical skills part. It was interesting, and I am glad it is over! This is the test that is taken in a "clinical setting" where we have 12 patients to see, and we have to "diagnose" them and tell them what we want to do next. The "patients" are really actors. The best part about going to take this test was that I got to the Flannagans! It was so good to see Terri and Chuck and so WONDERFUL to finally get to meet Knox! Here are some photos:

Currently I am working on my application for residency. I just finished writing my personal statement, and I'll probably submit my application by the end of this week. I know it is time for an update! There are so many things to blog about, so I'll try to give you a rundown and then post some pics later!

I started my Peds AI (acting internship) on August 2nd. It is really fun, and very helpful in letting me know a little bit what intern year will be like next year. I'm working with the Hematology Oncology (Team 5) team at ACH. There is one upper level resident (a 2nd year) and there are two interns plus me. Right now we have twelve patients on our service, and each of us "interns" have 4 patients. I go in each morning at 6:30 and get report on my 4 patients from the person who was on call overnight. Then I go to the floor and examine my patients, check their vitals, talk to their nurses, and write a progress note on them. We round with the attending at 9 AM each day. When we round we talk about things going on with the patients and work on our plans for them. Right now I have two sickle cell patients in for pain crisis, and two kids in for chemotherapy. After rounds we go write orders on the patients and then work on getting people discharged that need to go home. If there is an admission, one of the interns is asked to go do the history and physical on the new patient (usually in the ER or from Heme/Onc clinic).

Also during this month I am taking call "q4" (every 4th night) just like an intern. Luckily at ACH (and many children's hospitals) they have a night float system. This means that Sunday night-Thursday night, if you are on call, it is only until 8:00 PM, and then the person who is on nights that month takes over. If your call falls on Friday or Saturday night, you take overnight call. I had my first overnight call on Saturday night. It was an experience. What a strange feeling to be sleeping (yes I got a little) and then have a pager wake you up and have to run down to the ER to do an admission. I talked to some of the residents about it and they said it is not something you really get used to. The call went well. I did one admission for a skin infection (cellulitis) and one for sickle cell pain crisis.

That's the rundown on school. Craziness!

In other news...

-The first weekend of August we headed to the "Party on the Pottawattamie" with several friends. It was a blast, and my good friend Huck is now engaged! Congrats you guys!

-On Sunday after morning rounds we headed up to Greers Ferry for some fun at the lake, since I was off on Monday too. Nana and G rented a lake house and we got some good skiing in and had a great time. (Thanks Nana and G for getting the house and skiing us around the lake...loved it!).

-Jordan and I got our Razorback season tickets today! I am so pumped!!! Also, it looks like my next couple of rotations do not require me to work on the weekends, so we should make it to all the games! I can't wait!

-My good friend Terri's son Knox turned one month old on Monday. He is so precious and I love seeing all the great pics of him!

-Step 2 CS is August 27th.

-I've started working on my residency application. On Saturday I was able to sit outside and study on our back porch for a few hours--unheard of in July! Usually I'd have to been in a pool to make it outside mid-day in July! Being on the porch reminded me, I wanted to post about my furniture. Nana gave me this white wicker furniture this spring when she upgraded. It needed a new coat of paint and some new cushions. Here is the before:

And the after! I used espresso paint (about 12 cans!) and got the cushions at Garden Ridge. I have really enjoyed them!
Here are some pics of the flowers on the porch. On another earthly note...on Saturday I was innocently pulling weeds in the front flower bed, when I suddenly noticed a worm. Or what I HOPED was a worm. Then I noticed the triangular head and how the worm coiled up--a SNAKE! In the flowerbed! I quickly yelled for Jordan, who, well, terminated the snake. At that point I was thinking, it's ok, it was one (admittedly small) snake. I can keep going. Keep on pulling those weeds. Within 2 minutes I look down and see ANOTHER (also small, but still creepy and slithery) SNAKE! AHHHHH! So I quit. Went inside. No more weed pulling for me! Don't worry, today we went to Home Depot and got some "Snake-Away". I will not put up with these intruders! I know some snakes are good and all, but I'm totally freaked out! I hope they go away soon!

One week from today I take the big test! I am so ready for it to be over!

What a Weekend...

This weekend we packed up the car (with three sets of golf clubs!) and headed down to Texarkana for the wedding weekend of Drew Smith and Amanda Pruett. It was a fun weekend! The wedding was at First Baptist Church and the rehearsal dinner and reception were both held at the Texarkana Country Club. On Saturday all the guys headed out for golf, and I stayed at the hotel to study. Here are a few pics from the weekend!

Jordan and I at the reception.

And taking silly pictures as always!

Jordan with the groom.

On Friday night someone let us know that there is a new restaurant in Arkadelphia: Chicken Express! Jordan was so excited! So, on Sunday we made the stop in the delph to try it out! I have to admit, it was really good! Especially the sweet tea! Here is Jordan really excited he got some of that tea!

Of course while we were in Arkadoo we had to go by campus and check out the new construction. It is incredible! This first pic is of the new drive into campus "Ben and Betty Elrod Drive". It goes right by the softball field and comes up behind SPEC.

And these are the amazing new dorms! They are built in a huge circle that opens up towards the bridge over the ravine. Kinda makes you want to go back! Daniel is torn down now. Congratulations to the newly married couple!

Update on Step 2 Studying: It's going well. I've gone through my review book once now, my goal is to get through it 3 times before the test. I've done about 600 practice questions and still have 1800 left to go.

Have a great week!

They measured my head...

for my graduation cap yesterday! We had registration yesterday for the last year of medical school, and in addition to the financial aid station, tuberculosis skin test station, and CPR certification station, there was a graduation station! They measured our heads for cap sizes and took down our names exactly as we want them on our diplomas! How exciting! I've known my schedule for next year for awhile, but here is a quick run-down...it is glorious!

July: Step 2 CK (clinical knowledge) study time. I'm taking an online class for credit while I study for my test, which is July 26th. Right now I am studying every day as much as I can! (although I will admit that today I was mildly distracted by the MJ memorial--I thought it was great, he really was a legend, and many of my favorite artists performed!)

August: Acting Internship in Pediatrics. I will work with an inpatient team at ACH as more of a "team member" than "student". I'll have a little more responsibility than when I rotated through Children's as an M3. Also on August 27th I'll take the second part of Step 2 (CS-clinical skills) in Atlanta.

September: Allergy and Immunology at Children's. This was recommended to me by my advisor, apparently the Allergy and Immunology folks are good people to know if you want to be a resident at ACH!

October: required rotation in Orthopedics, Urology, Anesthesia, and ENT. One week of each.

November: Infectious Disease at ACH. Very useful rotation, will cover all kinds of good topics on an inpatient team. Infectious Disease docs are consulted for weird and hard to manage infections.

December and January: OFF!!! That's right, many glorious days of sleeping in and being lazy with no tests to study for! Also during this time we'll be traveling a lot as I go to different hospitals for interviews. I'm really excited about being off the whole month before Christmas too!

February: Primary care month at ACH. I think it is one week of general peds clinic, one week of ER, and two weeks of subspecialty clinics (like asthma, cardiology, etc.)

March: OFF again!!! And again nothing to study for. Also, Match Day is March 18th--this is the day when all M4's find out where they are heading for residency!

April: 10th block course. Our whole class comes back together for a wrap-up course of med school, and a crash course on actually being doctors.

In order to have so many months off, I am taking two longitudinal courses (they meet once or twice a month) that I am very excited about. One is a Pediatric Pharmacology/Toxicology course that will be very helpful in deciding what medicines to use for common conditions. The other I am SO PUMPED about: I'm teaming up with two other friends to be leaders of a small group for an M1 course called Introduction to Clinical Medicine, where we'll be teaching the new med students how to do history and physicals! It should be really fun!

And graduation is May 16th I think! It's that weekend anyway! Another great thing about fourth year besides getting to pick your own schedule and having lots of time off is that every course is Pass/Fail! Hallelujah!!!

Our floors are officially finished in the kitchen! Jordan finished the trim last night. They are wonderful and every time I look at them I smile! Made all the difference!

Looking forward to the end of this week, for the much anticipated arrival of BABY FLANNAGAN!!!!!!!

Home Improvements...

Last year on Thanksgiving weekend, we started a kitchen remodeling project. At that time we tore out a section of cabinets to open up the room, repainted all the cabinets white, and also repainted the walls. Since then, we have been looking for flooring for the kitchen. As you can see in this before photo, our old floor were linoleum and were in rough condition. A couple of weekends ago, we found new laminate flooring (at a very good price)!!! We were so excited! So, this week, Jordan, his brother Chad, and his friend Luke installed our new kitchen floors. Take a look...

This is the before photo...

Installing the first couple of rows! I am amazed at the difference it makes. It really opened up our kitchen. They also installed these in the laundry room and it brightened things up in there too!
That was Jordan's exciting project of the week! I was so excited and had very high expectations. Let me just say that my expectations were exceeded! It was so amazing...the music, the costumes, the story, the performers. They were all incredible! It was really a beautiful show and also very funny! We both laughed and I of course cried. I can't stop listening to the soundtrack. If you get the opportunity to see this wonderful show, do not pass it up!!! You will never look at the Wizard of Oz in the same way again!

Here is a pic from inside the Orpheum, right before I got in trouble for using my camera inside! We went down Beale and then sat at the Peabody watching all the people. While we were eating breakfast we saw a really tall guy and his entire family all decked out in Grizzlies gear. Jordan got on his phone and looked up who the new players were and he was one of them! Then, later at the Peabody, we saw two more super tall guys in Grizzlies gear. We saw all 3 of the new players that weekend! Jordan was excited!
Here's Jordan trying on a silly hot dog hat in a weird store on Beale.
On the rooftop of the Peabody...
Right before we left town on Saturday, we headed down the alley to my favorite BBQ restaurant, Rendezvous. If you have never been there, you have to go, just for the experience. The restaurant has been there for years and years! This was Jordan's first time. We had a blast! It was a great way to celebrate me being done with my third year of medical school!!!

Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend!!!

Something wicked this way comes...

I am finally ALMOST finished with my surgery rotation AND third year of medical school!!! The only thing left is my NBME (nationally standardized test) on Friday morning. And then, Jordan and I are off to Memphis to see WICKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am SOOO pumped! I have wanted to see this since my sophomore year of college! As soon as we heard it was playing in Memphis, my mom got tickets for Jordan and me. Will definitely post more about this exciting trip!

I thought I'd share of the highs and lows of my surgery rotation, just for fun.

Coolest surgery: plastic surgeon reconstructed half of a man's face using the muscle from his belly

Second coolest surgery: aortic thrombectomy...We cut into this woman's aorta and pulled out huge blood clots from inside, and also pulled several up from her legs. It was insane...the clots came out exactly in the shape of the blood vessels (you could even see smaller vessels branching off!)

Longest surgery (that I actually stayed for the whole time): 8 hour liver resection (a man had colon cancer that spread to his liver so it had to be taken out)

Longest surgery (that I thankfully did not have to stay for the whole time): 12 hour aortic aneurysm repair...this guy had an incision from his back underneath his shoulder blade, curved around his body, down his abdomen to his groin. Crazy!

Best day: my private practice day during plastic surgery when I got to see a breast augmentation and tummy tuck--it is different than on TV!

Favorite surgery service: surgical oncology. This was my 4 week service and I really liked the team.

Least favorite service: vascular surgery. I thought is was pretty boring, but that's mostly because they didn't let us do much.

Coolest thing I got to do: I would have to say intubating a patient (putting a tube down their throat so they can breath while they are under anesthesia). It's harder than you'd think it is, and you have to do it really fast!!!

One thing I realized during surgery was that I really do like being in clinic. You get to interact with the patients so much more. I didn't do much clinic time in the last 8 weeks, but I got to go to clinic this Monday and was so excited to really get to be with the patients, as opposed to just seeing them in the OR and in the hospital. I also realized I can't wait to get back to ACH and see some kids!!!

Success!

My oral exam is over! Even after having to take it one day early, I was really happy with my score. And even more happy to be done with it!!! Now I can just focus on the NBME (a nationally standardized test, we take one at the end of almost every rotation) that is this Friday. This week we only have to work until Wednesday, and then we have Thursday off to study. So 3 more days of surgery!!! I have been on the Vascular Surgery service for the past week. These surgeons are very... opinionated, to say the least. They can throw a fit in a hurry!

On Saturday Jordan and I did some shopping. First, I have to mention the Amazing bagel we had at Panera bread for breakfast. Cinnamon Crunch--the best bagel I have ever had! So, while we were shopping, we found some new floors for our kitchen, and I think we are going to purchase them! They are laminate with a hardwood look. We have been looking for some new flooring for a long time and this has a great price! Also on Saturday, we ordered my new phone! I am so excited to be getting my new iphone in 7-10 business days! :) My old Blackberry Curve is not going to make it much longer!

Friday was National Flip Flop Day at Tropical Smoothie Cafe. They gave away over 500 free smoothies!!! The deal was, wear your flip flops in and you get a free 24oz. Jetty Punch smoothie, and you had the opportunity to donate to Camp Sunshine, a camp for kids who are terminally ill. It was a very busy day, but everything went great and Jordan had fun too!

I hope everyone had a great Father's Day!

Study, Study

I got an email yesterday...my oral exam for surgery will be Friday, June 19th. Yikes! So, starting tomorrow, I have to do some serious studying! I'll have to make out my plan tonight. From what I hear, the doctor that will proctor my exam is one of the more intense ones, but we have no control over who we get, so I'll just study hard and see what happens!

This is my last week of plastics, and then I'll move on to vascular surgery next week. A few of the OR cases I have seen while on plastics:

breast augmentation (both cosmetic and reconstructive after breast cancer)

face lift

tummy tuck

many, many, scar revisions and wound closures

Overall I think it's been a good rotation. One funny story: At ACH (Children's) on Wednesday, we were putting the blood pressure cuff on a little girl before she went under anesthesia for a wound revision. A lot of times with kids they'll tell them the BP cuff is "testing their muscles" or silly things like "this will tell us how many boyfriends you have." That's what they told this little girl and she replied "I'm five--I don't have any boyfriends--I'M IN PRE-K!". She was so appalled at the thought of having a boyfriend!!!

Today Jordan got a phone call from a Channel 7 reporter. She wanted to interview him! She called at around 2:00 and wanted to interview him for the 5 o'clock newscast, so it all happened very quickly! The story was on local businesses who use Twitter to offer deals to the people who follow them on twitter. We watched at 5 and it was a really good segment. And of course Jordan was excited to get his 15 minutes of fame. :) This was a welcome treat for him today after he got a phone call from the store early this morning--the oven was not working, the AC was broken, and they were out of cups! He was not a happy camper, but being on the news turned things around! Look for him to be on Channel 7 again next Friday talking about National Flip Flop day.

Have a great weekend! Wish I could be here....

Sandals Grande, St. Lucia...we joked all week that was P. Three more weeks of surgery, and I cannot wait for it to be over. I'll say this: it's been better than I imagined it would be, but still no fun. I finished four weeks of surgical oncology last Friday, and now am in the middle of two weeks of reconstructive plastic surgery. I'll finish up the last two weeks with vascular surgery. Also in the last week of surgery we are required to take an oral exam as well as a national standardized exam. The oral exam consists of a surgical attending (top dog doctor) and a resident (surgeon in training, already an MD) who will test me over 4 surgical cases which are given to them in a sealed envelope (there is a list of 30 cases to choose from). Depending on which attending you get, this can range from mildly painful/intimidating to excruciatingly painful.

Today in plastics we had two clinics, one at UAMS and one at ACH (AR Children's Hospital). I was so excited to get to spend some time back over at Children's. Kids are so fun.

Jordan is really busy with the store, and loving it. Tonight they had a fundraiser for Immanuel Baptist Church, so they were really cranking out those smoothies! He's really excited to get to work with our friend Rebecca at Saline Memorial Hospital. If you are on Hwy 10, don't forget to drop by and see him!

Well, this is our blog. We thought it'd be fun to start one, especially with all that's going on with Jordan and the store and me with school. In the next year I will take Step 2 CK/CS (the second part of my medical boards), apply to residencies, MATCH!, and finally graduate! We wanted all of our friends and family to be in the loop with all of the craziness that will happen in the next year. Lots more to come! Oh, and for all the ladies out there, you have got to go purchase this:

It really gives great color and doesn't have that self-tanner smell that some of the other "gradual tanning" lotions have.

We'll try to be good bloggers and update often. Once I figure out how to hook my camera up to the computer, I'll show you all the cute patio chairs and table I just finished painting. I'm really proud of them! Have a fun weekend! I'm planning on getting lots o' sun and relaxing by the pool (after weekend rounds course)!
